PURA BESAKIH · THE MOTHER TEMPLE
Terraces of shrines
on the mountain's slope.
Besakih climbs the southwest slope of Gunung Agung in terraces of black-roofed shrines. It is the largest and most important temple complex in Bali, and its founding story begins with the five metals of Panca Datu.
Visitors are welcome in its outer courtyards, wearing a sarong and sash, and accompanied by a local guide.
TIRTA EMPUL · THE HOLY SPRING
Cleansed in
sacred waters.
At Tirta Empul, spring water runs from a long row of carved stone spouts into the bathing pools. Balinese come here for melukat, purification by water, to be cleansed and to begin again.
Melukat is done in person. It cannot be done for someone else, and we do not offer it. Our Tirta Waters pieces, moonstone and clear quartz, are made to remind you of it.
CAMPUHAN · WHERE TWO RIVERS MEET
Two rivers meet,
and neither is lost.
Below Ubud, two rivers join at Campuhan. Local tradition holds that Rsi Markandeya meditated here before founding Pura Gunung Lebah on the bank. The name Ubud is often traced to ubad, medicine.
SUBAK · WATER SHARED
Harmony with the divine,
with people, with the land.
Bali's rice terraces are watered by the subak, a cooperative system of canals and water temples. It is listed by UNESCO as a cultural landscape, and it is the clearest expression of Tri Hita Karana: harmony with the divine, with each other and with nature.
